Build
a Nest Challenge
|
||
|
Seventh
graders in Ms. Kelley's and Ms. Weber's classes have had birds on the
brain lately. The challenge: Design a nest that can hold the most mass
in pennies. Students were given one "bird buck" to spend to
build their nest using materials like pipe cleaners, paper strips, toothpicks,
and string. Awesome engineering! Check out the Photo
Gallery for more pictures from this event.

Thomas Jefferson Middle School students attended a performance by the group Manding Jata on Friday, April 24th. Manding Jata profiles the music, dance and oral traditions of the Mandespeaking peoples of West Africa. Transcending colonial borders, Manding Jata presents the cultural legacy of the great Manding and Mali Empire, centered in the fabled city of Timbuktu. Students and staff alike were entertained and informed about the culture, music, and dancing. Click here for more information about Manding Jata. Check out photos from the performance by visiting the Photo Gallery.
| Seventh graders in Ms. Kelley's and Ms. Weber's science classes have been studying invertebrates during the month of April. Students learned the characteristics of each invertebrate phylum through hands-on stations based on multiple intelligences. Once they knew the basics, they enhanced their knowledge by dissecting clams, earthworms, crayfish, grasshoppers, and squid. Students were even given the chance to taste calamari (fried squid) after they completed the dissections. Check out more pictures from squid dissection by visiting the Photo Gallery. Who knows? We may have some future medical professionals in this group of seventh graders! |

Ladies and gentleman, start your engines! Eighth grade science students in Mr. Mills' and Mr. Lee's classes have been putting their skills in physics to use by designing, building, and racing mouse trap cars. The project is simple: build a working vehicle using a mouse trap as the movement mechanism. Then the mouse trap car will need to travel a certain distance in the TJMS Speedway. Creative engineering was definitely in place as students worked in collaborative groups to build their cars as well as complete data on the process. Check out the Photo Gallery for more pictures of this fun design experiment!
| Students in House 8-2 created some amazing social studies projects during trimester 2. In February, students researched and created powerpoint presentations on famous African Americans. Click the image to view these amazing powerpoints. Students also completed research on immigration, relating it to their studies of US History. Students created enteraining skits to share their knowledge of what it would have been like to be an immigrant. Check out these videos by clicking here! Making
Connections
In November and early December, House 6-2 students in 2nd Period Language Arts with Ms. Thimmesch met with residents at Bethany Homes Retirement Community. This was a valuable character building experience as the students formed a special relationship with the people who live there. |
Each student gained important interview skills and learned how to compose a character sketch on the resident with whom they met. During the visits, both the students and the older adults had the opportunity to share life stories. Some of the students were asked by residents to return for individual visits outside of school - the people at Bethany Homes enjoyed connecting with TJMS students, and the students appreciated the opportunity to learn from them. |
